What Technology Do Modern Magicians Use on Stage?

The honest answer from behind the curtain: show control, apps, wireless audio, automation, and the discipline that holds it all together. The technology is real. The hardest part is making it disappear.

The most common question I get from people after a show is some version of: how did you do that? The second most common, from other performers and producers, is: what are you actually running back there? Both questions are asking about technology, even if only one of them knows it. Modern stage magic is built on a layer of systems, hardware, and software that audiences are never supposed to notice, and in a well-built show they do not. That invisibility is the whole point, and it is also the part that takes the most expertise to get right. Below is an honest account of the technology landscape in contemporary magic and mentalism, written by someone who performs with it, consults on it, and has built tools specifically for it.

01 · The foundationWhat does "show technology" actually mean in magic?

When people imagine the technology in a magic show they tend to picture something specific: a trapdoor, a mirror, a hidden compartment. Those things exist. They have existed for centuries. But the technology stack in a modern live show is considerably wider than that, and most of it has nothing to do with the moment of impossibility itself. It has to do with precision.

A live performance is a sequence of moments that have to fire in exactly the right order, at exactly the right time, without a perceptible seam between them. Audio has to hit when the performer says a certain word. A light cue has to change the instant something is revealed. A video element has to sync with a gesture. In theater, all of that is handled by a technical director running a booth with a script and a headset. In most magic shows, especially touring ones and corporate bookings, there is no booth, no dedicated tech director, and no second pair of hands. The performer is doing all of it alone, in real time, in front of a live room. Show technology is the infrastructure that makes that possible.

02 · Show controlHow do magicians fire cues without a tech booth?

Show control is the category of tools that lets a solo performer trigger audio, video, and lighting cues from the stage without assistance. This is one of the areas I have spent the most time working in directly. I built Cue Killer specifically to solve this problem: a show-control app for live performers who need to fire cues on time from wherever they are standing on stage, without a button that an audience can see them press.

The core challenge in any show-control system is concealment. The trigger has to be invisible. Solutions vary and the specifics are not the kind of thing working performers discuss in public, but the general landscape includes foot-operated switches concealed in staging, small Bluetooth remotes designed to be held without being seen, voice-activated cue systems, and purpose-built apps that integrate with the performer's existing devices. The right choice depends on the show, the room, and the performer's specific blocking.

What matters more than the trigger mechanism is what happens after it fires. The system has to be reliable enough that the performer can depend on it without checking it. Doubt in a live show reads on the face, and a face that shows doubt breaks the spell before any technology does. A show-control system has to earn the performer's trust completely, or it creates a new problem worse than the one it was solving.

03 · Apps and mentalismWhat role do smartphones play in a modern mentalism act?

This is where the technology story gets most specific to mentalism, and where the landscape has changed most dramatically in the past decade. Smartphones are now part of the majority of working mentalism acts in some form, and the range of ways they are used is wider than most audiences suspect.

At the straightforward end, apps on a spectator's own device can display information, play media, or present choices in a way the performer directs. At the more sophisticated end, custom-built apps communicate wirelessly between the performer's device and a spectator's, exchanging information the audience does not see exchanged. There are apps that use the device's sensors, apps that intercept predictable behaviors in how people interact with a phone screen, and apps that coordinate multiple devices in a group simultaneously.

The registry currently tracks hundreds of apps across categories, and the number grows every year as more developers enter the field.

The critical discipline with apps is the same as with every other technology in a magic show: the tool must disappear. The moment a spectator suspects their phone is part of the method, the wonder evaporates. An app used clumsily is more damaging to a performance than no app at all.

04 · Wireless audioWhy is the audio system so important in a magic act?

Audio is underrated as a technology category in magic, and it is one of the first things that separates professional-level shows from amateur ones. A mentalism or magic act lives and dies on timing. The laugh lands at the right beat, the reveal hits on the right syllable, the music swells exactly when the impossible thing appears. None of that precision is possible without a wireless microphone system the performer trusts completely.

Working performers typically use professional-grade lavalier or headset microphone systems, chosen for reliability and for the profile they present. A visible mic pack changes how a performer moves and, in a close-up or theater setting, signals "this is a performance" in a way that works against the intimacy the act depends on. The placement, the concealment, and the transmitter pack all need thought.

Beyond the main microphone, many acts use in-ear monitoring: a wireless earpiece that lets the performer hear music, backing tracks, or cueing audio without the audience hearing it. This is the same technology used by musicians, broadcast journalists, and theatrical performers. In a magic context it also allows for communication with an offstage collaborator when the show design calls for it, though the ethical and transparency dimensions of that are a different conversation.

The technology that earns trust is the technology that never makes itself the story.

05 · Automation and illusionsWhat electronics go into stage illusions?

Large-scale stage illusions, the kind that involve vanishes, levitations, transpositions, or escapes, have always involved mechanical engineering. What has changed is how much of that engineering is now electronic. Modern large illusions routinely incorporate servo motors for precise and repeatable mechanical movement, pneumatic or hydraulic actuators for lifts and drops, wireless control systems that let a stagehand trigger a mechanism from offstage at the exact right moment, and custom-built electronics that sequence multiple mechanical events simultaneously.

The precision this enables is qualitatively different from what purely mechanical systems could achieve. A servo motor can execute the same movement to within a fraction of a millimeter, every performance, eight shows a week. That repeatability is what makes a dangerous-looking illusion safe: the margin of error is engineered out, and what remains is theater.

On the smaller end, close-up and parlor magic have their own electronics tradition: gimmicked objects with embedded magnets, sensors, or microcontrollers that respond to conditions the performer sets up without the audience being aware of them. The miniaturization of electronics over the past two decades has put capabilities into objects the size of a coin that would have required a tabletop device a generation ago.

06 · Video and projectionWhen do magicians use screens, cameras, and projection?

Video technology shows up in magic acts in several distinct ways, and the worst uses and the best uses are almost opposite in spirit. The worst use is spectacle for its own sake: a screen running behind a performer to add visual noise or cover for what is actually happening. An audience that has attended enough corporate events has learned to distrust the screen, and for good reason.

The best uses are specific and purposeful. Live camera feeds, displayed on a confidence monitor or a large screen, allow large rooms to follow close-detail work that would otherwise be lost past the third row. Projection mapping, where imagery is rendered onto a three-dimensional surface rather than a flat screen, allows objects to appear to transform in ways that are genuinely disorienting. Video evidence, shown to an audience before or after an effect, can strengthen the impossibility of something they just witnessed by confirming what it looked like from a neutral angle.

In mentalism specifically, video often does something subtler: it creates a record. A participant writes something on a piece of paper, and the writing is photographed or filmed and displayed. When something is later revealed to match what they wrote, the video evidence functions as a fair witness. It removes the possibility, in the spectator's mind, that the performer could have changed what was written later. The technology is serving the impossible moment rather than decorating it.

07 · The disciplineWhy is invisible technology harder than obvious technology?

Everything described above can work well or badly, and the difference is almost never the technology itself. It is whether the technology serves the experience or draws attention to itself.

A cue that fires a half second late breaks the spell. An earpiece that catches the light from the wrong angle invites exactly the question you do not want asked. An app that takes three seconds to load at the critical moment exposes the method not by being noticed but by introducing a pause that should not exist. In every one of these cases the audience does not need to understand what they just saw. They only need to feel that something was off, and once they feel that the wonder is already over.

This is why consulting on show technology is not primarily a conversation about which tools exist. It is a conversation about which tools fit this show, this performer, this room, and this risk tolerance, and then a much longer conversation about how to make whichever tools you choose completely disappear. The technology is only as good as its concealment. A method that is too clever to fail on the bench can be too fragile to trust on stage. A system that requires the performer's attention is a system that steals attention from the performance. The goal is always a rig so reliable and so invisible that the performer forgets it is there, because when the performer forgets it is there, so does everyone else.
